Late Gig Productions Studio Tour
Late Gig Productions has top quality facilities with the
most up to date equipment and a massive microphone collection
that includes a great selection of condenser and ribbon microphones.
We bring excitement and analog warmth to digital technology.
Recent projects include remastering 80's artists for a US
based record company who wanted to re-release some classics
into the digital world. Some of our small projects have really
taken off, with one recently receiving play on CBC Television and our live recording of "Nine O Five" has the record company's attention!
MIKE'S TIP
Mike Baggley is an outstanding engineer in high demand and a valued member of our team.
The trick to making great records is knowing your mics.
Think of a microphone as a mirror. You have to figure out
the best way to reflect the sound. The key to knowing your
microphones is experimentation.
- Throw 3 or 4 mics on an amp and see which one does the
trick.
- Put your vocalist in front of a wall of mics to see which
one makes their voice really come through.
- Try different placements and figure out what kind of range
your mics have.
You also have to remember that even the best mic can't make
something which sounds bad sound good. You have to get out
of the control room sometimes and go into that iso room or
live room and really listen to make sure you are getting the
best sounds out of the instruments.
Once you hear what it sounds like live, you will know how
it should sound through your monitors.
You have to know your monitors as well. Listen to one of
your favourite records through your monitors and figure our
what kind of response they have. Again, the key to this is
experimentation. There are no right or wrong answers, you
just have to find what sounds best.
